The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles, and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion, and Internet Animators
by Richard William

The definitive book on animation, from the Academy Award-winning animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Animation is one of the hottest areas of filmmaking today--and the master animator who bridges the old generation and the new is Richard Williams.
In this book, based on his sold-out master classes in the United States and across Europe, Williams provides the underlying principles of animation that every animator--from beginner to expert, classic animator to computer animation whiz --needs. Urging his readers to "invent but be believable," he illustrates his points with hundreds of drawings, distilling the secrets of the masters into a working system in order to create a book that will become the standard work on all forms of animation for professionals, students, and fans.

How to Write for Animation
by Jeffrey Scott

The world of animation has expanded far beyond the children's fare generations of Americans have grown up watching. Hit television series like South Park, The Simpsons, and King of the Hill have blurred the boundary between sitcom and cartoon and have aimed straight for adult audiences with a powerful admixture of social commentary and outright hilarity.
In movie theaters, with films like Toy Story and Shrek, digital technology has enabled animators to produce films both of stunningly realistic quality and the imagination and fantasy that the genre has always supplied. In the meantime, with recent hits like Tarzan and the forthcoming Atlantis: The Lost Empire, classic animation has never been more popular. It all adds up to an expanding market for writers who have an eye toward the future and an eagerness to work in a medium where the only limit is the depth of their imagination.
With step-by-step instructions, award-winning animation writer Jeffrey Scott details every stop on the road from inspiration to production, with sections on premises, outlines, storyboards, treatments, description, and dialogue, and much more.

The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation
by Ollie Johnston (Author), Frank Thomas (Author)

Thomas and Johnston, two of Disney's original animators, here give the inside scoop on how the studio created the works that have charmed the world. "The text is ambitious," said LJ's reviewer (LJ 12/15/81). The "authors simultaneously give a history of Disney animation and explain the processes involved in clear, nontechnical terms." Along with the splendid text are dozens of color and black-and-white photographs and illustrations. A "magnificent volume" that remains "essential for film collections and a feast for the most casual peruser."

The Animator's Workbook
by Tony White

Like so many of the crafts, animation has suffered from the introduction of new technology. In this case computer-generated images have done much to displace the art of animation. It is White's intention to provide a foundation for apprenticeship training in order to preserve the animator's craft. His book is primarily a multilevel workbook. The only assumption is that the reader will be a cartoonist with an interest in animation. White lets the reader in on all pertinent aspects of animation from inbetweening to matching dialogue with the drawn pictures. At the end of each chapter there is an assignment for the practitioner. A valuable reference tool for most libraries and essential for art libraries.

Too often in animation titles, the storyboard element is relegated to a minor footnote. This book presents a wonderful insight to the creative process of animation film making. Many animators and students collect resource material from feature films, and storyboard examples are rare and treasured items. As a storyboarder myself, I was in awe of the beauty and clarity of these works, many I was seeing for the first time. However, anybody with an interest in art or animation will enjoy this book. It is an amazing and definitive collection.

The Tarzan Chronicles (Welcome Book)
For its latest animated feature, instead of adapting a fairy tale, legend, or myth, Disney has chosen the relatively modern story of Tarzan. As it did with the heroes of its other recent movies, the studio focuses on the alienation of adolescence in its Tarzan, who no longer belongs with the apes who raised him but doesn't fit in with the humans who invade his jungle home. The book tie-in to the movie recounts how the filmmakers faced the challenge of developing a new version of the character strong enough to overcome the vivid adult image of Tarzan made pervasive by Johnny Weissmuller and his live-action-movie successors. Besides hundreds of color and black-and-white illustrations, from early conceptual drawings through production stills, the volume features excerpts from diaries kept by the movie's creators, including sketches from a safari the animators went on to research the film's African setting. This handsome coffee-table book should join its fellow Disney tie-ins (e.g., The Art of Mulan ) on library shelves. Gordon Flagg

The Art of Mulan
The book details the movie's history and production and presents more than 350 beautifully produced illustrations that include early conceptual drawings and character designs, background paintings (many evocative of classic Chinese watercolors), and production stills. The text discusses the animators' visit to China to research the story's setting and the film's overall visual design, which stresses elements and simplifications that are common to both traditional Chinese art and effective animation. Any library possessing a shelf of the handsome volumes chronicling Disney's animation renaissance of the past decade shouldn't hesitate to add this one to it. Gordon Flagg

The Art of the Hunchback of Notre Dame
In the tradition of the bestselling fine art companions to The Lion King and Pocahontas, The Art of the Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the rarely seen spectrum of art produced during the film's creation, including conceptual material, sketches, layout drawings and storyboards. This is truly dazzling fine-art collection of spectacular animation from one of Disney's landmark creations.

Pinocchio
This is the ultimate book on any animated feature. While you may have seen the fine "Art of" books dealing with films like Mulan, or The Lion King, these hold nothing when compared with Lambert's scholarship. More importantly, the quality of the reproductions is mind boggling-- they look more like original cells than mere printed art work. They actually have a 3D feel to many of them. If you are a fan of great animation art, take a look at this book in a bookstore- if you can find it. That may convince you that the 30% off price avaiable here is well worth your investment.
